Dr Sophie Shotter explains why this Hyaluronic Acid treatment is so good for ageing skin

Have you ever looked in the mirror and wished you could turn back time? Maybe just knock off a few years to when your skin looked more youthful, lines were less obvious, and you didn’t need to rely on makeup to ‘get the glow’.

It’s a fact that since our thirties, our collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid has been rapidly depleting, along with oestrogen, if you’re post-menopausal. It’s these essential components that contribute to healthy looking, hydrated skin. The type that is the preserve of the young. Bouncy, smooth, plump and glowing skin.

Don’t worry, all is not lost!

A treatment is available that uses Profhilo, an injectable solution made by HA Derma, that can remodel the skin while hydrating it from the inside. Dubbed by the media, ‘the injectable moisturiser’. It’s an ultra-pure completely synthetic hyaluronic acid that is biocompatible. It integrates into the skin tissue restoring hyaluronic acid levels, and kick-starting the fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin. Profhilo has an immediate effect, smoothing and plumping the skin, as well as longer term benefits, it encourages the skin to behave as it did when you were younger.

Hyaluronic acid may already be in your skincare routine. It’s been a major ingredient in many brand’s formulations in recent years. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to retain up to 1000 times its own volume in water, helping the skin to retain moisture. There is only so much that HA can do topically, but when Profhilo is injected into the skin, hyaluronic acid is literally taken to another level, deep within the dermis.

What is Profhilo, and how can it rejuvenate the skin?

We asked our Aesthetic Doctor, Dr Sophie Shotter, to explain more about Profhilo – watch our video below.

Who is Profhilo best suited to?

Profhilo has been created for people whose skin lacks volume and elasticity. It increases the hydration of the skin at a low level and performs a bioremodelling action, which naturally gives the skin a younger and healthier appearance. The effect is best in people who have cared for their skin, avoided smoking and the sun. It softens fine lines but won’t eradicate deep wrinkles.

Where can Profhilo be injected, is it only the face?

It’s not only the face that can benefit from Profhilo, the neck, décolletage and hands can also be treated, as well as tummy, arms and knees. Treating these areas together will give a greater effect of youthfulness.

Where do you inject Profhilo into the face?

In the face, Profhilo is injected into five areas on each side, these are known as the Bio Aesthetic Points.

In the video below, Dr Sophie demonstrates the Bio Aesthetic Points, clearly showing where Profhilo would be injected

Is Profhilo a filler?

Profhilo is not to be confused with fillers. Profhilo does not perform the same action as it has the consistency of running honey. When injected into the five points in the face, Profhilo spreads throughout the dermis. While it’s in the skin, approximately, 20-30 days, Profhilo stimulates the fibroblasts to become more active, giving a longer term effect.

A filler is more stable and will stay in the area it’s injected into. For a combined effect Dr Sophie Shotter has created the Ultimate Glow treatment using Profhilo and Juvéderm Volite.

How long does a Profhilo treatment take?

After an assessment, Profhilo is injected into the skin at five separate points of the face. There is a slight stinging sensation as the solution is injected into the dermis. You can expect there to be five tiny bumps on the face that might last for several hours. Other than that, there is no downtime, and the treatment itself only takes about 15 minutes after consultation.

How long does a Profhilo treatment last?

It’s recommended that you have two initial treatments one month apart, and then a refresh treatment every 6 months. In some cases, three or even four initial treatments may be recommended. You can expect the effect of a Profhilo treatment to last between 6-8 months.

Finding the right doctor to carry out a Profhilo treatment

Aesthetic treatments such as Profhilo should only be carried out by a fully qualified and insured doctor or nurse. We recommend Dr Sophie Shotter MBChB BSc Hons, Medical Director and Founder of Illuminate Skin & Wellness Clinic
