We review the lifestyle brand that lifts your energy and mood

It’s not an understatement to say the past three years have been stressful. A global pandemic, family bereavement, and more responsibility than I have ever had, left me caring more for everyone else than myself.

I felt a disconnect between mind, body and soul. Yes, I was functioning and surviving well enough but was I thriving? I’m not sure I was. I felt somewhat adrift, dashing through life and not really stopping to enjoy it at times. We all have deadlines and full diaries these days, it’s not unusual but I wanted to feel more connected with myself.

And where better to go than The House of Kalmar. When spiritual healer, Karen Ruimy created Kalmar, her intention was to bring harmony back to people’s lives. To help them reconnect through holistic treatments and find their Joy, Calm, Peace and (self) Love. They became the pillars of each treatment offered at The House of Kalmar.

Working with energy healer Sinéad de hÓra, Karen created four Kalmar treatments focused on these four soulstates. Each designed to bring a state of harmony in the mind and body using ancient techniques, meditation, mindfulness, visualisation and intention setting, combined with massage, reflexology and healing.

To complement the treatments, each soulstate has a corresponding range of body care products. Joy, Calm, Peace and Love are expertly formulated and beautifully fragranced to lift your mood, energise or relax you, according to what your mind and body need at the time.

Kalmar treatments

Arriving at the House of Kalmar you feel a sense of tranquillity as soon as you enter the building. There is only one treatment room, so you are assured of a bespoke and personalised treatment every time you visit. It’s beautifully furnished and you feel quite indulgent as this is a home and not a therapist studio.

I was introduced to my therapist Sam who I felt an immediate connection to. Sam has many years’ experience as a therapist and intuitive healer. She asked me to look at a sheet and tell her how I would like to feel, and which chakra needed more attention. From my answers Sam suggested that Calm was my soulstate.

Calm – intention: surrender

This is the Kalmar description of my treatment: A treatment to harmonise your “second brain”, the digestive system, it allows you to release any worry or concern whilst reconnecting deeply to your body. Using specific reflex points on the feet combined with a deep abdominal massage, this treatment is targeted to emotionally de-stress, aid digestive issues, as well as ground your mind, body and soul to promote optimum health and wellbeing.

I’m not always good at surrendering to treatments but while Sam carefully massaged my body, used pressure points on my feet and worked her magic on my mind, I felt blissfully relaxed and calmer than I had felt for years. It made me realise just how important the power of touch is and how much we had all missed this during the pandemic. Human touch is an incredible medicine. I experienced many different sensations during my treatment, some I can only describe as spiritual, that gave me great comfort and also bereavement closure, an acceptance of love and loss.

The Calm fragranced Restore Body & Massage Oil also worked its magic. The delicate blend of iris, lavender and amber is intoxicating and works at a sensory level to relax you. Even now the fragrance can immediately evoke a sense of wellbeing and calm in me.

After my treatment Sam made some suggestions. I needed to work on my breathing as I shallow breathe – I am still a work in progress on this count. As I find meditation so hard, Sam suggested journaling. Writing down my feelings and expressing gratitude as an alternative to traditional meditation, and the recommendation to read Louise Hay’s book, You Can Heal Your Life.*
