Beauty expert Nikki Taylor advises on how to get the perfect brows

We know as we age we lose definition and structure in our facial features. Recent research showed that when this definition was added back into the face using makeup, the women were perceived to look younger.  There are two main areas that we lose this colour – lips and brows.  Here we are tackling the subject of brows and also demystifying the choice of brow products that are available.

Brow tips to remember:

  • Your brows are sisters not twins so please do not try and make them identical
  • Your face is not symmetrical so don’t panic
  • Please keep the shape of the end of your brows nearest your nose to a soft straight line that runs north to south on the face
  • Rounded brow ends or ends that run diagonally are not flattering
  • A fuller brow is always more youthful
  • Your chosen brow product should be of a cool toned shade with no red tones in it, as this will make the brow area look sore
  • If you colour or highlight your hair your brow tone should match your natural hair shade
  • To determine your brow shape you will need a brow pencil or brush and a mirror

Look in the mirror straight on and line your brush up the side of your nose up to the inner corner of your brow – this is where your brow should start.  Then line up your brush from corner of your nose and over the iris of your eye – this is where the arch should be – this is the highest point of the brow.  Then line your brush from corner of your nose through to far edge of your eye – this is where the tail of your brow should finish.

Whichever type of brow product you select apply in feathery strokes and brush through after with a brow brush.

HD Eye and Brow Palette* £24.00 Available from Lookfantastic
This is a great kit of powder based brow colours – they can also be used as eye shadows.
Using a brow brush start at the arch of the brow and brush through colour using light feathery strokes.  This palette also contains a brow wax which you use as your final step.  This adds shine back into the brow making the hair look healthy.

Bobbi Brown Natural Brow Shaper and Hair Touch Up* £19.00 Available from John Lewis
A super natural brow gel to define and groom the brows.  Available in both tinted and a clear shade.  Also perfect to groom straggly hairs in the brow.  Often used by men to touch up greys in the beard and sideburns.

Nars Brow Gel* £19.00 Available from Lookfantastic
Again, similar to the Bobbi Brown product and also available in tinted and clear versions.  If you like the idea of a brow gel I would take a look at the shades available and select the brand that you feel has the best shade for you.
Tip from me – although I use a brow powder or pencil to shape and define my own brows – I still groom and finish my brows with a clear brow gel.

JML Light Up Mirror* £14.95 Available from Amazon
I absolutely love this mirror.  A regular mirror one side and 2x magnifying on the other, the addition of the LED lights are perfect light for grooming the brows.

Tweezerman Petite Tweezers and Case* £12.50 Available from Lookfantastic

Eyebrow Brushes
My personal choice of the best eyebrow brushes would include:
Nars Brow Defining Brush £22.00
Bobbi Brown Eyebrow Brush £22.50
Laura Mercier Double Ended Eyebrow Brush £29.00

It’s no coincidence that all these brushes come from makeup artist brands as they really are worth investing in and will last for many years.  They are all available from John Lewis.

Remember groomed brows are the perfect frame for your face whatever style of makeup you wear!
