Yes! If you are over fifty you need to increase you daily protein intake

Protein is often referred to as one of the building blocks of life. Our bodies are made up of around 15% protein and it’s a vital source of energy. Muscles need a regular intake of protein to remain healthy and it can have a positive impact on our bones and cognitive function as well.

Protein is a fuel our muscles need to remain healthy as we get older

And as we get older, our muscles start to shrink, our activity levels decrease and often so does our appetite. Our muscles are vital to our overall wellbeing and healthy, strong muscles will help prevent frailty in later life. To protect our muscles from shrinkage we need to regularly exercise them and ensure we consume enough protein to help rebuild muscle tissue.

Protein is essential to building and maintaining muscle mass. It is commonly found in animal products, though is also present in other sources, such as nuts and legumes.

Protein is made up of 20 amino acids. Nine of them are labelled ‘essential’ as they can only be obtained from food, rather than made by the body. These nine are crucial to building and repairing muscle.

Why do we need more protein as we get older?

As we age our muscles absorb less protein from the food we are eating. And we become more resistant to the positive effects of dietary protein. So, we might think we are eating enough protein but in fact, the foods we used to eat when we were younger, just aren’t delivering enough protein now we are older.

Recent studies recommend that older adults should be consuming between 1.2-1.5g per kilogram of bodyweight (0.6-0.8g per pound).

Dietitian Zoe Cottrell created Provytl 50+ to close the protein gap

“As we age, we can combat the loss of muscle and the reduced response to protein by providing our bodies with more protein while ensuring we engage in some form of activity or exercise to whatever level you can manage,” Zoe says. “This boosts muscle protein synthesis allowing you to retain your muscle mass or even increase it, regardless of your age.”

Protein is also needed to produce hormones that control cholesterol levels, keep bones healthy, and help run the digestive system and thyroid function. “For women, it’s particularly important to ensure protein intake is sufficient, as our hormones fluctuate and oestrogen depletes during the menopause,” Zoe adds.

As a registered dietitian, Zoe was seeing older patients on medical and surgical wards, who had experienced a fall. She spent a lot of time explaining that as we get older we need to increase the amount of protein we eat each day to stay healthy.

Zoe found that many people were unaware of this increased need for extra protein and has created a supplement to help people bridge the protein gap. We all lead busy lives and by creating a simple and easy way to get more protein into people’s diets, Zoe hopes Provytl 50+ will close gap and help people live longer more active lives.
