Having survived the end of the Mayan calendar and Christmas I am enjoying a few days off. 

Was the huge sales rush just before Christmas all those people who had believed the world was going to come to an end?  Can you imagine the moment when they all realised that the world wasn’t ending and they hadn’t bought any of the presents.  Or were they all waiting for the sales?

I don’t know about you but I have grown too old to stand in a queue waiting to buy something that no one else wanted at full price.  I love a sale and have been known to run at the sight of a 50% off sign, but the thought of standing out in the cold and rain in the early hours of the morning to bag a bargain at Next strikes me as desperate.  If you want cheap clothes you can buy them all year round at Primark, turn up in daylight at a time to suit you and walk straight in.  Ok you will have to queue to pay but not in the cold and rain.

Surviving Christmas is quite an achievement when you have everyone in the house, especially as we no longer have children as such, they are fully grown adults who apparently need feeding more frequently than they did as babies. 
Is it another age thing that I don’t want to eat two or even three large meals a day?  I have got used to preparing and eating one main meal a day and maybe a small snack.  You should see the look on the faces of my daughter and her boyfriend; you would think they had just been informed that the world was coming to an end when I mentioned that we usually don’t have two large meals a day.

Thankfully my daughter is a wonderful cook, I say thankfully not for me as it does my waistline no good what so ever, but for her poor starving boyfriend who needs nourishment throughout the day – surely they have finished growing in their twenties?  The delicious food that has been coming out of the kitchen in the past few days has been something like Willy Wonka’s factory.  Chocolate Salt Caramels are exquisite and impossible to resist, as are Chocolate Brownies, Gingerbread and home baked bread, there’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the house.  The temptation to eat slice after slice coated with Lurpak (low fat of course!) alongside curried root vegetable soup is hard to resist.  At least it covers the five a day, the bread even had sun dried tomatoes in it.

Peaches baked in Masala wine have also been calling me from the fridge, somehow I managed to make far too many for a pre-Christmas meal and have had to ‘use’ them up for breakfast each day since, warm with a dollop of Greek yoghurt, what better way to start the day?  I have really tried hard not to over indulge but still enjoy myself over Christmas; it’s just so much harder to knock off the weight now than it used to be.  I have also managed to get out and walk the past two days, not only escaping the house and having some fresh air did me good so did the walk, I feel like my body needs stretching having sat at a desk for far too long this past year.

We have one more celebration next week with a birthday on the 2nd, and then I’ll be ready to start the New Year programme of detox, diet and new fitness programme.
