Rens Kroes brings a balanced approach to healthy eating and cooking

I have to admit that I’m slightly addicted to cookbooks.  I’ve even donated some recently to make room for more.  For me the pleasure isn’t only in the cooking, it’s the enjoyment I get from reading them and admiring the photography.  And Power Foods doesn’t disappoint on any of these counts.

Ren Kroes was brought up in the Netherlands surrounded by organic food.  Her grandfather an organic farmer, her grandmother a herbalist, and her mother a nutritionist.  Rens love of good, natural and organic food started from a young age.

What appeals to me about Rens book is that it’s a huge departure from the sea of ‘clean eating’ preaching bibles that have flooded the market in the past few years.  Rather than telling you what not to eat, Rens tells you how to eat well, how to enjoy food and how to have a balanced life.

Her sentiment ‘I believe a combination of healthy eating, enough physical activity, and relaxation ensures both fitness and happiness’ rings true with my own feelings about food.  I love food and I love to eat, but I know that I must balance what goes in with the expenditure I put out.  If I need to lose some weight I have to eat less and move more, it’s a simple calculation.

I love the woman who says she enjoys going out and enjoying a glass of champagne (or two) and the occasional late night snack of fries.  She say’s it isn’t healthy but, the happiness you feel from it is so important.  We all need to enjoy the occasional treat.  There’s the clue, the occasional treat.

Although Ren Kroes is the epitome of a young, slim blonde beauty, she is down to earth; her philosophy is sound and her recipes delicious.  The book is split into sections, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, sweets (yes she even makes sweets – healthy sweets!), spreads and drinks.  There are sections explaining Rens power foods and food as medicine.

As a coffee table book Power Foods delivers on all counts, the narrative is informative and enlightening, the photography beautiful without being too glossy.  Power Foods also excels as a cookbook, the recipes are all well within anyone’s capabilities, even if you rarely cook.  From nut butters to pasta dishes and oven roasted peppers, Power Foods has something to suit every taste.

Power Foods is the perfect book to give your son or daughter as they go off to University or your friend or relative who wants to eat better and embrace a healthier lifestyle without the preaching!
