Why is it even more important that people over 50 take vitamin D supplements during the summer?

One study found that people aged 62 to 80 years synthesised four times less natural vitamin D than those aged 20 to 30 years. The upper safe level for vitamin D is 100mcg per day from all sources, including oily fish and fortified foods. Most people get less than 5mcg per day from their diet, however. During these difficult times, when older people are cocooning at home during lockdown and seeing little sunshine, I recommend that those over the age of 50 take 25mcg to 50mcg vitamin D3 per day as a supplement.
