Self-care is health-care.  I’ve said it, written it, and firmly believe it, but in truth I don’t always practice it.  This year is already flying past and not long-ago people were making resolutions to be fitter, healthier, and generally to take more care of themselves.  But have they?  Aren’t we prone to carrying on looking after everyone else and putting ourselves last?

I’ve given self-care much thought recently after experiencing an extraordinary massage.  I’ve had very few massages in my life and when I have, they’ve been more for pampering, and relaxation, rather than therapy.  They have been enjoyable but not memorable.

I met Sarah Jane Watson several years ago when I first started Fighting Fifty.  Sarah Jane is one of the most serene and elegant women I have ever met, and we instantly felt at ease with one another.  We’ve enjoyed social occasions together but until recently I had never seen Sarah Jane in a professional capacity.  I knew she was a highly sought-after massage therapist with a loyal following of clients.  I knew Sarah Jane was passionate about massage and its therapeutic benefits, and promotes all areas of wellbeing.  What I didn’t know was, how intuitive Sarah Jane is, and how by the power of touch she can rebalance your body and mind.

Recently a lovely email arrived from Sarah Jane inviting me to experience a massage.  The timing couldn’t have been better, although I had kept active, I had recently broken my toe and hadn’t been exercising as much as usual, my body felt sluggish and out of balance.

Massage Therapy – the power of touch

Normally Sarah Jane visits clients in their own home or hotel room if they are visiting from abroad.  On this occasion, Sarah Jane kindly invited me into her home.  Much like the woman herself, Sarah’s home is an oasis of calm, a beautiful space flooded with light where you instantly leave your troubles at the door.  After catching up on all our news, I changed into a robe and slipped onto the massage table.  Sarah Jane protects your modesty always, and really appreciates the trust that a person puts in her when they are laying naked on the massage table not knowing exactly what’s going to happen next.

Once I was comfortable Sarah Jane began to massage my body with firm strokes while I lay listening to the most relaxing soothing music.  While Sarah Jane massaged I became acutely aware of my body, how it connects, how each muscle supports the bones and realised how blissfully unaware I had been of this in the past.  I don’t know how you can get to 57 and not really appreciate what a masterpiece your body is.  I have taken it for granted.  Expected it to function without question.  And have rarely given it enough maintenance.  Yes, I eat well, I exercise, I don’t smoke, but I don’t regularly have any treatments that supports my whole body enabling it to function better.  I wouldn’t expect my car to never let me down without regularly serving it, but I have never thought about my body in this way. 

Sarah Jane intuitively treats your body in the way she feels it needs at the time, working on every part from your head to your toes and finger tips.  Moving silently around your body, you can literally feel the tension releasing while your mind and body reconnect.  I have never experienced a treatment where my body seemed to come alive and function as it should in such a small space of time.  Over twenty years’ experience has enabled Sarah Jane to be able to read bodies with her hands, to know how to restore the rhythm and flow and put you back together again.

Massage creates physiological changes in your body

The experience of this treatment had an immediate effect on my body, I felt I was standing taller, my digestive system started to function better, and my head felt clear and calm.  The tension I carry in my shoulders and neck from hours spent at a computer had gone and I left with a renewed confidence.  As I stepped out into the sunshine, I felt reconnected and reinvigorated. 

I would never underestimate the power of touch, the healing of massage, or the value of time spent with a therapist who truly connects with you on all levels.  Sarah Jane Watson is an exceptional massage therapist and if you are lucky enough to be treated by her you will never forget the experience.
