Time for a holiday home?  Northern Italy has it all!

There are many positives about reaching this decade, and I think some of them are that you ‘hopefully’ have more time on your hands, kids have probably finished school and you don’t need to wait for school holidays to travel.  I’ve always loved Italy.  Its food, culture, wines, shopping – and the ease of getting there – but I recently came across this incredible new development in northern Italy, which is perfectly situated for both city break and sun and sea.

Sun, sea, sand and exceptional views – Portopiccolo Sistiana has it all

We flew to Trieste from London Stansted and it only took about 20 minutes to get to our destination from the airport.  Portopiccolo Sistiana is built on the site of a disused quarry along the Sistiana bay and it is absolutely stunning.  As you approach, you are welcomed by the crystal blue sea and an array of beautiful boats.  There are no cars allowed within the resort so we were dropped off at our hotel underground.  We stayed at the luxurious Falisia, which is part of Starwood Hotels, and came to also have a look at the apartments for sale which are built ‘in style’ into the cliff’s edge and all have sea views.

The Falisia is a beautiful hotel, which seems to offer the perfect mix of comfort with luxury – there are even Acqua di Parma toiletries in the bathrooms!

If, like me, you have always dreamt of owning a window with a sea view, it doesn’t get much better than this.  I was interested to hear that the entire resort is eco-sustainable from not having cars driving around to using the sun and sea as sources of renewable energy.   I looked at a couple of the two bedroom apartments.  One was beautifully finished and the other was completely unfinished – just floorings and plastered so that you could add your own touches.  The resort also offers a complete interior design service for an easier option.

Home owners at Portopiccolo are given their own pool, the Sky Pool which is the ideal spot to watch the sunset.

Time to dine

There are a few restaurants in the resort.  We ate one night at the hotel’s Cliff restaurant.  The food was incredible, not only beautifully presented but made from the freshest ingredients and the raw fish plate looked so pretty I almost didn’t want to eat it.

Can it get much better than this?

Beach Club at Portopiccolo

Maxi’s is part of the beach club so has the gorgeous sea view along with the best fresh pasta and pesto!  There’s also a great looking pizza restaurant and a cafe in the main harbour which was always busy.

There’s plenty to do in the local area with a number of superb local vineyards.  We visited the Kante winery where we did a tour of the winemaking process followed by a tasting of the Kante wines which are said to be some of the best in Northern Italy.

Perfectly located

Nearby Trieste offers an extraordinary mix of cultures and a unique atmosphere so there’s a lot to explore.  Two leading figures in literature were born in Trieste – Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba along with James Joyce who wrote his masterpiece ‘Ulysses in Trieste’ and lived there for many years.  There is a calendar of events from art exhibitions at the Museo Revoltella to the operatic-symphonic seasons of the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi along with drama, dance and music at the Teatro Rossetti.

Prices start at approximately €350,000* for a Studio apartment (1 room + bathroom), € 450.000* for a one-bedroom apartment and € 550.000* for a 2 bedroom.   This includes terrace, store room and parking space.
