I don’t know about you but I always feel, and look better when I’ve got a bit of makeup on.

As we age and everything starts to lose definition and colour, makeup brings our faces to life.  But many of us are still using the same products or techniques that we did years ago.  I know I’m not alone in being intimidated by department stores, harsh lighting and young flawless sales assistants, so when the chance came up to learn a few tricks from makeup artist Daniel Sandler I was one of the first in line for a ticket.

The Simon Seminars have been created by Simon Vallance to bring beauty experts to real women like you and I, so we can listen and learn in a comfortable informal setting.  The series of events kicked off last Saturday at The London College of Fashion with an audience with makeup artist Daniel Sandler.  If you don’t know about Daniel it’s time to find out, not only is he one of the nicest, most caring people I have ever met he is also a brilliant makeup artist who brings out the very best in all women.

Using three lovely models Daniel talked us through how to create the perfect look for daytime, and then how to vamp it up with a smokey eye for evenings.   If you’ve ever seen Daniel on QVC you will know how soothing his voice is as he explains what works for more mature skin.  Although he’s used to working with some of the most beautiful women, Daniel appreciates that all women want to look their best and feel more beautiful wearing makeup.

Here are some of Daniels tips:

* Gently tap concealer into the skin, use sparingly and don’t take it all the way under the eye

* Apply your base and blusher before making up your eyes, so you get don’t over accentuate

* Avoid powder, unless using Invisible Veil Powder, and then apply a little to your hands and press lightly onto skin

* Use waterproof eyeliner along the lash line to define eyes, gently smudge with a brush for a softer smokey look

* Define eyebrows; use a pencil or powder to fill any missing gaps, and if your eyebrows are very light have them tinted

* If you are worried about frown lines make your eyes and eyebrows more prominent

* Use a Magic Wand to line the lips and stop lipstick bleeding

* Use a slightly damp brush to apply your foundation

* Look for multiuse products that can be used on eyes, checks and lips

* Keep darker eye shadows to the outer eyelid and lighter to the inner eyelid

* Keep makeup brushes clean!

Daniel told a packed audience of women of all ages who had travelled from as far away as Scotland and Belfast, that there are no hard and fast rules, experiment and find out what really suits you.

Products in the Daniel Sandler range that I constantly use are the Water Colour Blush, which glides on and doesn’t move until you want it to, the Velvet Waterproof Eyeliners, which I have in black, grey and blue.  I couldn’t live without the smudger brush, the water brush and the concealer brush, and I’ve just bought the Retexturizing Face Primer which gives skin a lovely satin finish and the perfect base for foundation.

It’s also been said that to be touched by Daniel Sandler is to be touched by a magic brush!
