So it’s ‘That’ time of year again, when Gym Managers across the globe wish they were on commission for each new member that thinks they are going to change their life on January 1st

And this is where it starts to go wrong before you’ve even had time to get things right.  In truth on January 1st a celebratory Hang Over will most likely be chaining you to your bed (whilst the voices in your head tell you a sober, pious January will redress the balance of previous Bordeaux inspired indiscretions). The second problem once you find your trainers, the unpleasant looking slightly grey things hidden at the back of the wardrobe, is that the Gym is actually closed on New Year’s Day.  By January 2nd you’re most likely back to your routine and before you know it finding reasons not to implement all the positive things you had planned on December 31st.   Oh well, there is always 2015 to plan for.

So I have a controversial idea, instead of allowing ourselves to be bombarded with editorials, adverts and marketing of what we should be aspiring to and achieving in our lives, how about we take some responsibility over our own bodies and images?  If you’re tired of reading articles about quick fix solutions on diet, exercise, relationships etc. then just stop reading them, appreciate that every image you see will be digitally altered and ‘cleaned’ up and that’s ok because you’re smart and you know that.  Secondly Diets do not work, an understanding of when, what and why you eat does.  I’m not a dietician or nutritionist so rarely talk about food but In truth what you put in has a clear effect on what you want out, keep foods as close to their original form as possible, and if you can’t spell any of the ingredients (I’m not including names of wines here) then give them a miss, things designed to fill, add, preserve etc really have no place in our digestive systems.  Thirdly learn to play more, if you haven’t taken time to do this then start, diet and exercise are imperative to keeping a body strong but Play energises the soul.  Whatever play means to you, do it more, people never look more youthful or attractive than when they are laughing and smiling.

And finally Exercise, be prepared the Fitness industry is ready with every skittle coloured innovation to improve your workouts and help you achieve your goals, but remember what I said earlier about those pesky hidden additives and colourings.  If you didn’t like Aerobics before, you won’t suddenly like it now because it’s being taught by a strip tease specialist, if you weren’t a fan of Yoga before beware the anti-gravity classes, things never look as good the wrong way up…. The truth is all movement is exercise, and yes we want weight bearing, heart raising elements ideally too but more importantly we want exercise adherence, getting in the Pool once a year on Holiday does not a healthy heart make….so as you make your plans for 2014, be sure to include more of everything, more food (no one gets fat on too many vegetables and fruit), more play, seek out the partners, friends and lovers that make you laugh and inspire mischief and finally find a way of exercising every day, if it’s not part of your everyday routine it won’t be a part of the permanent changes you want to see….

Then again perhaps you’re actually pretty fabulous as you are?
