It’s thought that almost half the adult population in the UK report having back pain at some time during each year

Although there are many factors attributing to back pain, in 85 per cent of cases there is no clear pathology to identify the root cause.  If back pain develops suddenly for no apparent reason, it’s possible that your subconscious mind could be responsible.

Following twenty years of practice and studying her patients, Sophia Kupse, also known as the Muscle Whisperer, has identified stress as the major cause of back pain.  There is no doubt there is a physical link to back pain, which is more likely to strike the older you get, but she asks are we missing the bigger picture.  The more stressful our lives become the higher the incidence of back pain, surely this isn’t a coincidence.

Following a tragic accident in her twenties, Sophia Kupse learnt first-hand how powerful the mind is at both creating and overcoming pain.  From her own experience and that of her patients she has developed Langellotti Tri-Therapy (LT Therapy) a three way system to heal back and body pain.  The system combines an advanced muscle release technique using cryo and thermo therapy in the form of volcanic heat and ice marble.

Having read Sophia’s book, The Muscle Whisperer: The Keys to Unlocking Your Back Pain, I was lucky enough to experience the LT Therapy for myself.  Meeting Sophia it’s hard to imagine this petite and attractive woman having the power to manipulate rock hard muscles, but little did I know what strength she has in her hands.

I was convinced that the discomfort, rather than pain, I felt in my neck and shoulders were as a result of spending long periods of time in front of a computer.  Sophia explained to me that our minds and muscles work in unison, so if we are carrying emotional stress this in time will result in physical pain.  So although I don’t always move enough during the day the discomfort I’m feeling is likely to be stress related rather than the fact that I work at a computer.

During an appointment Sophia talks to you about possible causes of your pain and asks about your lifestyle, diet and exercise routine.  Next she examines your back, and as well as touching you she is also looking for tell-tale signs of stress.

Using traditional methods of Chinese medicine, dividing the back into fields of energy, the left is female energy and the right male, and the top being your present and the lower back your past, Sophia enquires if there are people in your life causing you stress. This might be something quite recent like a new boss, or a throw back to your childhood depending on where the pain is located.

It’s easy to see how patients relax, unwind and off load problems that may be troubling them.  This can be an emotional journey where people release tears as well as tension as the root cause of stress and pain become apparent.

As you talk Sophia gets to work releasing the tension in the muscles, firstly with manual manipulation using a blend of organic essential oils and hot volcanic stones.  These stones expand the blood vessels and increase circulation allowing oxygenated blood into the muscle, this helps the muscle to relax and release the lactic acid which has built up around it.  When the muscle is pliable again Sophia uses ice cold marble to send a positive charge to the muscle and reduce inflammation starting the healing process.

The expression ‘no pain no gain’ really did spring to mind as Sophia manipulated what she described as a slab of concrete on one of my shoulders and a large rock on the other.  It was extremely painful at the time and also to the touch for some hours afterwards.  I was expecting to wake the next day with a bruised back, but in fact there was only a slight redness on one shoulder.

The first thing I noticed was an increased range of movement, my shoulders no longer felt locked, I could walk more upright with my shoulders back and the tension in my neck had gone.

I had expected Sophia to say that I would need regular visits to keep my neck and shoulders mobile, but she explained that it’s all down to me now.  I have to learn how to prevent stress taking over, using meditation, exercise and diet to prevent reoccurring pain.  Prevention is better than cure, but if you are suffering from on going back pain which has no obvious cause it could be stress related.  Read Sophia’s book to understand the triggers for stress related emotional back pain and discover the keys to unlocking the pain.

Sophia Kupse practices in London and Leeds treatments start from £35 in Leeds and £50 in London.
