We put a natural digestive remedy to the test

It’s embarrassing, to say the least – but flatulence is one of the top three tummy troubles afflicting Fighting Fifty readers, according to our research. And, as most of us have discovered to our chagrin, it’s a problem that becomes harder to avoid with all the fun, fizz and festive foods time of year. Add seasonal stress to the mix and you could also suffer with acid reflux, painful heartburn, along with typical IBS symptoms such as bloating, cramping, constipation and tummy upsets.

But there is a solution

We invited readers to try the natural remedy silicol®gel for a range of gastrointestinal symptoms and, at the end of their 10-day trial, 61% and 55% reported relief from reflux and heartburn respectively, while 50% said the remedy solved their flatulence. Typical IBS symptoms of abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea and nausea also responded to the treatment – because silicol®gel coats the stomach and upper gastrointestinal tract with a protective lining of silicic acid that traps, absorbs and ultimately removes the culprits behind these symptoms.

‘I’ve waited 40 years for a treatment like this!’

For Fighting Fifty reader, Maria Avraam, 63, from Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire, the trial was life-changing.

She says: ‘I was diagnosed with IBS in my 40s, having already suffered decades of bloating, cramping, and feeling like I was always running to the loo. The diagnosis was a relief – at least I knew it was IBS and nothing more sinister – but putting a name to my condition did nothing to alleviate my symptoms.

‘I was especially likely to suffer pain and tummy upsets straight after eating, and that made it hard to relax and enjoy a meal with friends. ‘Days out were ruined, too, because I was constantly worried about accessing the nearest toilet.

‘I tried various recommended remedies for IBS, including probiotics, charcoal, mint and aniseed teas, but none worked long term. Instead, as time went on, I developed additional symptoms.

‘By May 2019, when the opportunity of the silicol®gel trial came along, I’d started waking at night with indigestion and acid reflux. I couldn’t lie on my back without feeling sick – and over the counter medicines like Milk of Magnesia and Rennies weren’t working for me. I was sleeping badly and that meant my days were now dogged with tiredness as well as tummy pain.

‘But, from my first day on the trial, my symptoms subsided. By taking silicol®gel three times a day as advised, I was pain-free, and sleeping well! After all these years, silicol®gel is the only treatment that’s worked for me.’

Tackle your tummy troubles

Understand the role of stress
Gut reactions are a natural response to stress, and a calmer mind can help to keep problems like heartburn at bay.

Be diet savvy
Avoid large late-night dinners – they’re a recipe for heartburn – and aim to eat slowly and mindfully to keep flatulence at bay.

Give your gut a break
An overnight fast of 12 to 14 hours will help your gut repair itself so you’re less likely to suffer with digestive problems.

Check your weight
Excess weight increases pressure in your abdomen, encouraging acid reflux and heartburn.

Bedtime stories
Sleeping on an incline, with your head and torso higher than your feet also reduces heartburn.

TLC for tummies
Treating your upper gastrointestinal tract with silicol®gel will help prevent a multitude of problems caused by toxins, acidity and gases. Susan Cotton, 61, from Suffolk, has been using the product for two years and says: ‘silicol®gel has helped my heartburn and indigestion as well as normalising my bowel and reducing excess wind.’

See your doctor
One in four GP appointments is for gastrointestinal issues. See your doctor if you have persistent symptoms that do not respond to DIY measures.

silicol®gel costs £8.29 for 200ml or £18.49 for 500ml from Boots*, Holland & Barrett, Tesco, Superdrug, Lloyds Pharmacy, Victoria Health and other independent health food stores and pharmacies nationwide.
