Want to improve your sex life?  It could be time to invest in one of the latest organic lubricants

Lubricants, lubes, call them what you will – are having a bit of a moment.  And why not? Mistakenly often seen as something you only need if you are having ‘problems’ they could actually be just the thing to revolutionise your sex life.

And okay, for many menopausal women, vaginal dryness can be an issue: as oestrogen levels drop your skin, hair, nails, eyes all get drier.  But the thing is, women – whatever their age – will suffer from vaginal dryness at some point in their life.  This can be the result of medication, for example, the side effect of some antidepressants and allergy medications.  It could be a response to stress and anxiety or the result of using a highly perfumed washing powder or soap.  It might be that hormonal changes are to blame due to contraception, pregnancy, your period and, of course, menopause.  And last but not least a lack of foreplay can mean you are not sufficiently aroused and penetration can feel uncomfortable, kind of scratchy and a bit like you are having sex with a chair leg!

Sex, most of us will concur, is better when it is wetter!

In short, unlubricated sex can manifest itself in unlovely sex – and possibly in you not wanting to do it anymore.  But even if vaginal dryness is not an issue for you a lubricant can just make sex feel better and all round more comfortable – for both of you.  It can also help prevent damage or abrasion to the delicate tissues of the vagina (this can be a particular problem around menopause when the walls of the vagina tend to thin due to falling oestrogen levels and the vagina also becomes less elastic).

Organic sex

You can, of course, go some way to eating (and drinking) yourself lubricated by drinking plenty of water and getting plenty of omega 3-rich foods in your diet like oily fish, nuts, seeds (particularly sesame, sunflower and linseed) and hydrating foods like fruit and vegetables (the ones with the higher water contents like water melon, cucumber, celery and apples are recommended).  But a mixture of eating ‘lubricating’ foods alongside the use of a lube could be the perfect recipe for improved sex.

So what lube do you choose?

Many couples use whatever is close at hand – hand cream, massage oil, petroleum jelly – but these or some of the highly perfumed shop-bought lubricants can contain ingredients that can potentially lead to irritation, allergy or possibly Bacterial Vaginosis, thrush or cystitis.  And given most of us choose a healthy – and where we can – organic diet (and possibly skincare too) it seems odd that we aren’t really applying the same type of criteria to something we are using internally like a lubricant.  Excitingly, things have evolved in the lube world and there are now a great selection of natural and organic options.

Feeling good…

We are big fans of Yes, Yes, Yes available in Holland & Barrett the first certified soil association- accredited organic range of lubricants (water or oil-based) – fragrance free and made from plant extracts.

We also like SYLK Natural Intimate Moisturiser* available from Amazon – look on the bottle and you’ll see, reassuringly, water is the first ingredient followed by extract of kiwi fruit.  You feel safe getting up close and personal with either of these ranges.  But two of the very latest offerings are equally inviting and wholesome: the jauntily named Good Clean Love range which includes the Almost Naked Personal Lubricant*, an aloe- based 95% organic lubricant slightly scented with lemon and vanilla.

But the most handsome young lubes on the market at the moment must surely be the new TOKA range – beautifully packaged silky gels and oils containing ingredients like cotton extract and organic red grapes.  The products like the Natural Pleasure Gel* also come in handy single dose sachets (which look like little sachets of moisturiser or hand cream) and these are housed in those hyper stylish little tins.

It is worth pointing out lubricants can serve another purpose other than simply providing moisture: the very act of applying them can make you feel a bit sexier, remind that you are a sexual being.  Gently applying it to your clitoris and vagina can be arousing in itself.

In short, you just might just find yourself getting better sex out of a tube!
